RAPID RIVER -- The Escanaba Eskymos' bats were hot Wednesday night against the Rapid River Rockets as they took home a 22-0 win via the mercy rule in the fourth inning in Rapid River.
"We've been working hard," said Eskymos coach Andy Fields. "We had a tough weekend downstate over the weekend. We played a lot of good teams. We actually went to the turf facility before coming out here today.
"We just tried to come out here and do business as usual because, with the cold, it's hard to concentrate and keep your composure, but I give my ladies credit. They came out here and took care of business and got the job done today."
Emily Moore earned the shutout win for Escanaba with eight strikeouts, only one hit and one walk.
Carsyn Segorski (3-4) had 6 RBIs with two home runs, both for three runs each.
"(Carsyn) is my three-hitter. She's the anchor," said Fields. "You've seen what she did today. She hit two home runs. She's a tough out."
Erica Moore (3-3) also sent a ball over the centerfield fence for a two-run homer.
McKenna Bullen went 4-4 with three RBIs and three runs for Esky.
Fields took the opportunity the lead presented to get some of the younger Eskymos some experience.
"All my younger kids, the JV call-ups … they all did good," he said. "Delaney McIntyre got her first hit as a varsity player today.
Just, all in all, 1 through 16 that I got here today, they played well today."
Natalie Belanger pitched all four innings for the Rockets and had four strikeouts.
The sole hit from Rapid River came from Cecilia Pilon on a single line drive to centerfield.
Rockets coach Tim Belanger gave kudos to the Eskymos after the game.
"Escanaba is a great team," Belanger said. "They hit the ball very well … We did make some plays, but we messed a few plays up, too, and with a team like Escanaba, you can't do that. Granted, they just hit the ball."
Belanger also mentioned youth and inexperience as a factor in some of the game's moments, but those moments would serve as lessons.
"We are very young," he said. "The young inexperience show a little bit today in some plays.
"Any time you play a game you learn something from it. We learned that we still got fight in us, right? When they were at their biggest winning margin, we were still fighting. We were fighting until the end. And I love that about these girls."
The Eskymos head down to Frankenmuth on Friday while the Rockets host Kingsford on Friday.
