ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos kept the ball rolling on their undefeated season Thursday night with a doubleheader victory (13-5, 15-0) against the Negaunee Miners in Escanaba.

The first game went into a brief rain delay as the skies opened up in the opening innings. A drizzle persisted on and off throughout the remainder of the first game and all of the second.

“I’m glad we got it in,” said Eskymos coach Scott Hanson. “It was not fun for anybody, but you do what you gotta do.

“We’re hitting the ball really well and pitching really well. The kids are doing a super job.”

Riley Lamb started on the mound for the Eskymos in game one. He allowed two hits and three runs (1 ER) and was relieved by Trent Lawson after one inning. Lawson had four strikeouts.

Escanaba got the bats going with eight runs in the second inning, three in the third, and two more in the fourth.

The first game, we got down a couple right off the bat,” said Hanson. “But our guys don’t panic, and we make stuff happen.”

Brett Schlenvoght pitched the second game for the Eskymos and earned the shutout win. He had three strikeouts and allowed two hits in three innings of play — the game ended via the mercy rule in the bottom of the third.

Escanaba scored four runs in both the first and second innings of game two. In the third, they pushed seven across the plate to bring the game to a close.

Casey Bray and Riley Lamb each had three RBIs in the game.

Hanson noted the youth of the Miners.

“Negaunee is young and a really classy program, though. They’re going to be fine in a couple of years once they get some experience.”

The mound was shared by Hunter Haanpa, Howard Johnson and Owen Debekak in game one for the Miners while game two saw Mason Bannfield and Matthew Peters split the pitching.

The Eskymos now prepare for a busy week after finishing this week’s set of games today.

“It’s a big week for us next week,” Hanson said. “We have Peshtigo (Friday) then we have I think seven games next week with Cheboygan on Saturday, which was our draw for districts.

“So, we’re building up. We got a really big week of baseball. Things are going great, and hopefully, we keep it rolling.”
