ESCANABA — Two Upper Peninsula girls’ basketball players received Division 4 all-state recognition from the Association Press Monday.

Carney-Nadeau junior Tessa Wagner and Ewen-Trout Creek senior Elise Besonen were selected for the first team by a panel of 11 Michigan sportswriters.

Wagner had a field goal percentage of 65 this year and averaged 23.3 points per game. She also averaged 17.9 rebounds per game.

The Wolves reached the final four in the state tournament this year by defeating Rudyard 62-52 in a state quarterfinal. They collected a district and regional championship along the way.

Carney’s season came to an end in the semifinals against eventual Division 4 State Champion Fowler — whose coach Nathan Goerge and Mia Riley earned coach and player of the year honors, respectively.

Rudyard’s Chesney Molina, Pickford’s Kennedy Guild and Baraga’s Rylie Koskinen and Reide Osterman received honorable mention.

Starting at $3.50/week.
