GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves made their home debut a successful one here Monday in a 5-3 baseball triumph over the Menominee Maroons.
Gladstone led 3-0 until the fifth inning when the Maroons rallied to tie the score.
The Braves regained the lead on a double by Nick Martin and scored an insurance run on a single by Ryan Polley in their half of the fifth on this cold and windy day.
“It seemed like we were going to cruise through this one, then we had that one bad inning,” said first-year Braves’ coach Lucas LaCosse. “Menominee has some kids out due to COVID. They have a good ball club. It was pretty cold out there, but we’re glad to get the win. The cold gets a little rough on the arms.”
Owen Trombley led the Braves (2-1) with three hits, including a leadoff double in the fifth.
“Owen has gotten off to a real quick start, and Nick’s double was a nice hit,” said LaCosse. “Nick is a good, young player who does everything you ask of him.”
Sophomore Braden Sundquist took the win in relief of Noah Peterson, who pitched the first four innings.
“Everything happened for them when we made the pitching change,” said LaCosse. “Being a sophomore and not getting to play last year, there’s got to be a little bit of nerves there. I told Braden it’s just a game and to have fun. I worked a lot with Noah in Junior Indians last year. I have confidence in his ability. Noah is starting to pay attention to detail and developing into a real good pitcher.”
The Braves visit Bark River-Harris for a doubleheader today at 4:30 p.m.
