MARQUETTE -- An X-factor for the Escanaba Eskymos in a historical season, Erik Victorson, was named to the All U.P. Dream Team recently in Marquette by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Iron Mountain's Foster Wonders (who finished Michigan Mr. Basketball runner-up) was named both Player of the Year and Mr. U.P. Basketball in addition to being named to the Dream Team.
Victorson -- who transferred to Escanaba at the start of the school year -- finished his high school career at 1,000 points on the dot. He hit a three-point shot in the dying seconds of a state quarterfinal against Bridgeport to hit the mark.
He averaged 10.5 points per game and totaled 46 assists and 26 steals on the season.
"He's probably one of the best defenders in the U.P.," said Eskymos coach Tracy Hudson. "He's probably one of the best individual defenders I've had."
Victorson's Escanaba teammates Carter (11.5 PPG, 7 rebounds per game, 64% free throws) and Colin Hudson (12.4 PPG, 29 total steals, 37.5% 3-point FG, 84% FT) both earned All-U.P. Honors as well as being named to the First and Second teams, respectively.
"Carter's been a great rim protector and very physical player for us," said coach Hudson. "He's also an excellent defender. I think one of the top defensive players in the U.P.
"Colin's probably one of the most versatile players I've coached -- whether it's a dunk, a point guard or being a slasher. He's had a great year. I think he's going to be one of the top players next year in the U.P."
Also named to the First Team was Gladstone's Cam Ballard. Ballard averaged 19.8 PPG, 4.6 RBG, 4.2 assists per game, was 40% on 3-point FGs and 92% from the charity stripe.
"Cam has been our best player all year," said Braves coach Mike Cretens. "Not many people can say they shoot 50-40-90 percentages. Cam is one of the most talented athletes in the U.P. and brings true sportsmanship to every game."
Bark River-Harris' Trenton Wood-Keshick was named to the Second Team.
"Trenton was a two-year starter who was a big part of our offense," said Broncos coach Marc Zawacki. "He created mismatches inside the paint along with outside the arch."
North Central's Luke Gorzinski (17.4 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4.4 APG, 3 steals per game) was named to the Division 4 First Team.
"He was the core of everything we do. Our primary scorer, team leader, point guard and best defender," said Jets coach Mike Malone. "His lateral speed and intelligence are things you just can't teach. His calm & poise on the floor kept our entire team from falling apart."
Beau Koffman -- who broke 1,000 career points this year -- of Carney-Nadeau earned Second Team honors. He averaged 21.2 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 5.2 APG and 2.1 SPG.
"He led his team to the state quarterfinal," said Wolves coach Paul Polfus. "He has put in a tremendous amount of time over the last four years to become the player he is today."
Mason Kudlick from Rapid River earned a place on the Second Team.
Escanaba was named Division 1-2 Team of the Year, and Iron Mountain was named Division 3 Team of the Year.
Mountaineers coach Bucky Johnson earned Division 1-3 Coach of the Year. Rudyard's Jim Suggitt copped that honor for Division 4.
Division 1-3 Honorable Mentions include Brandon Frazer, Escanaba; Nick Javurek, Bark River-Harris; Hunter Potier, Gladstone; Joey Stein, Bark River-Harris; Carter Zawacki, Bark River-Harris.
Division 4 Honorable Mentions include Kyle Frusti, Superior Central; Ian Gorzinski, North Central; Travis Johnson, Big Bay de Noc; Parker Maki, Superior Central; Jesse Sampson, North Central.
