ST. CLAIR SHORES — The Bink’s Coca-Cola Escanaba Hawks 10U Squirt team soared through pool play and the semi-final match at the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) 10U State Finals hosted by St. Clair Shores last weekend.
Ultimately, the Hawks came up short in the championship game, losing to Muskegon by a score of 5-1 in a hard-fought battle.
“The kids pressed hard and controlled the puck for the majority of the final game. Unfortunately, Muskegon’s goalie and defense kept us in check, and we just couldn’t find the back of the net,” said Coach Trevor Sholten
Prior to reaching the finals, the Hawks faced Cadillac (3-3 T), Trenton (4-0 W), and Muskegon (9-4 W) during pool play Friday and Saturday.
On Championship Sunday, the Hawks rallied to a 14-3 semi-finals win over Troy.
Escanaba’s run through the finals was led by ten-year-old Chase Korpi (5G, 6A) and nine-year-olds Vincent DeSlavo-Bougie (7G, 3A), Henry Sholten (3G, 6A), Jayce Braun (6G, 2A), and Garrett Lanaville (2G, 6A). Every skater on the twelve-person roster had three or more points during the five-game tournament.
“The balance shown on the score sheets speaks to true team play and the selfless dedication of these young athletes. It’s a hard-to-find quality at such a young age,” noted Sholten.
The Escanaba Hawks would like to thank all the community support .
