Braves’ Hughes wins another

SAULT STE. MARIE — Sophomore Drew Hughes earned top honors, and the Gladstone boys came very close to taking the team championship in the Sault Ste. Marie Elks Invitational cross country meet here Saturday.

Sault and Gladstone scored 42 points apiece, with the hometown Blue Devils gaining the title on a tie-breaker. Third-place Gaylord North Trails Academy had 57.

Hughes covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 6.6 seconds. He was followed by Sault senior Jaron Wyma (17:13.6) and Braves’ junior Giovanni Mathews (17:35.8).

Gladstone senior Lucas Hughes took 10th (18:21), followed by classmates Blake Krouth 12th (18:37.5) and Wyatt Madden 18th (19:26.5).

Sophomore Grant Mason was Manistique’s leader in 25th (19:56.6).

The Sault girls won with 37 points, followed by Gladstone 71 and Munising 84.

Munising sophomore Hattie Cota took top honors in 21:38.9, followed by Sault sophomore Cassandra Gallagher (21:49.3) and Gladstone junior Samantha Strasler (21:59.1).

Braves’ junior Jamisyn Bergeron placed ninth (22:34.5), followed by classmate Lilly Karl (22:55.4), senior Lindsey Cox 22nd (23:42.2) and freshman Kayla Farnes 23rd (23:52.2).

Manistique was led by sophomore Clara Gilroy in 29th (24:24.3).
