Eskymos girls fall against Maroons

ESCANABA — The Escanaba girls tennis team rebounded after its 8-0 loss to Negaunee, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Menominee in Escanaba Tuesday. The Maroons overpowered the Eskymos 6-2.

Escanaba’s two wins came at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

At No. 3, Esky’s Ukiah Penegor edged Erin Barrette in the first set, 7-5, but with what Penegor learned in the first set, she had an easier time in the second, earning the set 6-3 and the match.

In the No. 4 match, Amanda Beem had an easier time overtaking the Maroons’ Pearl Wellens. After a 6-1 first set in favor of Beem, Wellens stepped up her game in the second but couldn’t put it all together as Beem won the set 6-2 along with the match.

“On the singles side, we were able to get wins at No. 3 and No. 4, with Ukiah Penegor and Amanda Beem both getting straight-set wins,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said.

In the remaining singles matches, Esky’s Jacey Moreau fell to Jenna Nolde in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at No. 1.

“At No. 1 singles, Jacey Moreau fell to Jenna Nolde,” Ogren said. “Jenna is probably the strongest player in the U.P. this year. She’s always a tough match, and she played extremely well today.”

Rounding out singles, the No. 2 match was the only one of the day to go to three sets. After a decisive Menominee win from Josie Hafer in the first set (6-1), Esky’s Sophia Derkos turned the tables to earn a 6-3 win in the second to force a third. However, Hafer repeated her performance from the first set and took the match with a 6-1 third.

“Sophia Derkos played the only match that went to three sets today,” Ogren said. “Sophia was able to play a near-flawless second set to send the match to a third set. Josie really played well in the third set though. She did a nice job of cutting down on errors and keeping the ball in play. It was one of the best matches I’ve watched one of my singles players play all year. I hope that these two meet again at U.P. finals because, with their competitiveness and style of play, it will always make for a fun match.”

The Maroons swept the doubles matches — although without any shutouts in each of their two-set victories.

Menominee’s Abbie Anglehart and Meghan Francour defeated Lizzy Sliva and Madi Mishica at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0), and Esky’s Gracie Wickham and Abby Hill fell to Emma Anderson and Jada Vanbeek 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 match.

At No. 3, McKenna Bullen and Lilia Hughes were defeated by the Maroons’ Anna Nerat and Kennedy Olson (6-1, 6-3), and Bella LaVia and Makenzie Wellner topped Esky’s Delaney McIntyre and Leslie Purcell, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 4.

“Another competitive day against a good team,” Ogren said. “They were certainly better on the doubles side, getting all four wins in straight sets. We fought well in many of the sets, but we just weren’t able to finish. Menominee plays the net extremely aggressively, and this makes them a tough team to beat on the doubles side. Playing Negaunee and Menominee back to back is a good experience for our doubles girls with U.P. finals right around the corner.”

Escanaba hosts Norway Thursday. Menominee visits Gladstone Monday.
