Esky girls tennis falls against Norway

NORWAY — The Escanaba girls tennis team fell 4-2 in a tough match against Norway here Thursday.

The teams split in singles, and the Eskymos dropped both of the doubles matches.

“This is Norway’s first year with a tennis team, so we used a team of jayvee players today,” Eskymos’ coach Chris Ogren said. “There were only six flights, one through four singles and one and two doubles.”

The Eskymos’ wins came at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Esky’s Lily Newhouse finished off Norway’s Mackenzie Gilroy in two sets. After a first set tie-break 7-6 (7-3), Newhouse controlled the second set (6-1).

At No. 4, Anna Valiquette had an easier time against Toby Marley, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Escanaba dropped No. 1 and No. 2 singles in two sets as Lizzy Sliva and Sam Manninen of Escanaba fell to Kali Stanchina and Donna VonHolla.

Both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles went to a third set, and No. 1 involved a tie-break in each of the first two sets. The Eskymos duo Allison Detiege and Raeanne King couldn’t keep up with Norways Kassandia Gyselinck and Gabby Leiker.

In No. 2 doubles, Norway’s Andi Carlson and Averie Popp also overwhelmed Esky’s Sam Soper and Val Royer in a tie-break to seal the match.

“Both doubles matches went to a third set and combined for a total of five tie-breaks played,” Ogren said. “I’ve honestly never seen so many tie-breaks played in only six flights. It really shows how competitive and evenly matched the tennis was today.”
