Esky tennis splits with Marquette

MARQUETTE — The Escanaba girls were involved in another tight tennis match here Thursday, playing to a 4-4 tie with the Marquette Redettes.

Esky earned 5-3 victories over Gladstone and Kingsford earlier this week.

“Both teams were missing a player today,” said Esky coach Chris Ogren. “It wasn’t exactly two teams at full strength, but it was still a great day of tennis. Four different matches went three sets and most were extremely close.”

Esky’s Gracie Wickham and Abby Hill rallied past Alyson LaBelle and Hannah Young 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles and Delaney McIntyre-Leslie Purcell topped Nistha Gautam-Sam Heikkila 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4.

“Gracie and Abby played their best tennis of the year today,” said Ogren. “They’ve been getting better all year, and it was only a matter of time before they broke through and earned a win. I think they’ll have many more this year as they continue to grow.

“Ukiah Penegor also played a tremendous match at No. 3 singles. Her match lasted over three hours and she was absolutely exhausted by the end. Despite the difficult loss (1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3), Ukiah never gave up and played hard for every minute of an excruciating match.

“Not only did we have a competitive day of varsity tennis, we also brought 18 JV players and they all got to play. It was great to see so many players that are new to the game get an opportunity to learn and compete today.”

Esky’s Sophia Derkos took a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 decision from Ruth Hummel in No. 2 singles and Amanda Beem defeated Lexi Hammerstrom 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.

The Eskymos, who won 5 of 9 JV matches, host Gladstone Tuesday at 4 p.m.
