Braves swept by Maroons
Brian Bell | Marinette EagleHerald Gladstone’s Marnnea LaFave returns a shot during No. 1 doubles play in Menominee on Tuesday.
MENOMINEE — For the first time in coach Nikki Mathieu’s seven-year career, the Menominee girls tennis team pulled off a complete-match sweep of its opponent, taking down Gladstone 8-0 in Menominee on Tuesday.
“Pretty ecstatic about this one,” Mathieu said. “The girls took it one point at a time today and everyone played fantastic. We are working on not carrying on thoughts about missed shots or unforced errors going into the next point and focusing on the current point, and that helped us today.”
Jenna Nolde and Josie Hofer picked up their second wins of the season as Nolde defeated Alaina Trudeau at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Hofer topped Kate Matthews 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
“I knew going into the match today that it would be a tough one,” Trudeau said.
“I just need to keep focused and to learn from my mistakes.”
Erin Barrette moved in to the No. 3 singles spot for Menominee and took down Rachel Krouth 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, and Makenzie Wellner fell to the No. 4 singles position where she nabbed her first win of the year over Addison Trombley 6-3, 6-1.
“We struggled against Menominee today,” Braves coach Ryan Barron said. “They are extremely aggressive at the net and my girls couldn’t seem to avoid them. I do notice huge improvements from my girls. I am looking forward to playing them again at the end of the season to gauge our improvement.”
At No. 1 doubles, Abbie Anglehart and Meghan Francour bounced back from an opening-set loss to Marnnea LaFave and Emma Delaire to take the next two sets and pick up a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
“After Abbie and Meghan lost their first set they started talking, playing their match and eventually ended with a 6-0 sweep,” Mathieu said. “Barrette (swept the final set), too. That’s all it took for them was to focus, take a couple moments and play their game. It comes with time and experience, and you can see the girls gaining more and more of it everyday.”
Emma Anderson and Rylee Doyle had no issues with Emma Wagner and Alesha Marenger at No. 2 doubles, winning 6-0, 6-1.
“Today’s match against Menominee was a very hard loss for Alesha and I,” Wagner said. “They had excellent alley shots and could place the ball very well. We just need to work on our placement of our returns and being always on our toes to get to the alley shots. Today’s match was a good learning opportunity for us, and now we know what to work on for our next match.”
Anna Nerat and Kennedy Olson won their No. 3 doubles match 6-2, 6-4 over Montgomery Pepin and Maggie Buckely, and Bella LaVia and Jada VanBeek won both sets 6-4 for a win over Lahna Castor and Sophia Rose at No. 4 doubles.
“(The match) wasn’t as good as yesterday (in a 5-3 loss to Escanaba),” Pepin said. “(We) still have lots to work on, and we are discovering more things about the game each time.”
Gladstone hosts Negaunee this morning at 11.
