Showers’ late basket lifts Trojans past Cougars in OT

EBEN — In an entertaining Skyline Central Conference boys basketball game, Tommy Showers made the play of the night to lift the Forest Park Trojans to a 61-58 overtime road win over the Superior Central Cougars Friday.

With the contest knotted 58-58 and just three seconds remaining in the extra session, Showers took on a triple-team and was still able to score through contact and completed the 3-point play at the free throw line to lift the Trojans (8-7, 7-5 SC) to victory.

The Cougars (3-13, 1-11 SC) had a chance to take the lead at the charity stripe on their previous possession, but they missed the front end of a 1-in-1 to give the ball back to Forest Park.

“It was just a great, great high school basketball game,” Cougars coach Harry Robbins said. “Crystal Falls is a great ball club. Earlier in the year we got beat 60-40 by them (Jan. 10). We’re improving each game. I thought it was a good opportunity for us to pick up a win.”

The Cougars took a 17-11 lead after the first quarter, then held that lead until the Trojans rallied in the fourth to force overtime.

“We have four juniors and we got rattled at a few critical times,” Robbins said. “They put a lot of defensive pressure on us, and a few times we couldn’t handle it.

“But I’m extremely proud of the way the kids played. I told them it’s not a loss. The kids played their hearts out. Unfortunately, somebody has to come out on the losing end. That’s just the way it is.”

Parker Maki hit four triples and led the Cougars with 19 points. Will Carlson added 13, while Kyle Frusti chipped in 12. Michael Leppanen had 10.

Gavin Johnson hit five 3-pointers and led the Trojans with 17 points. Keal Emmers added 16, while Showers chipped in 15.

The Cougars had 19 turnovers and the Trojans had 14.

Superior Central, which lost the JV game, hosts Stephenson Tuesday.
