IRON MOUNTAIN — The Northern Lights YMCA swimmers put on a strong performance last weekend at the Iron Mountain Polar Plunge.

Edye Burdett placed first in four individual events and became the newest swimmer to qualify for the state swim meet in the 25-yard backstroke in the girls 8 and under age group with a time of 20.54 seconds.

“Edye is a ball of fire in the water. It’s been fun to watch her harness that energy and use it in her swimming,” said NLY coach Scott Dykema. “She makes a great addition to our team that is heading to states.”

Sisters Annabella (14) and Irene (12) Neumeier both swam well. Annabelle placed first in three events, including the 13-14 girls 100 breaststroke, 100 fly and 50 freestyle. Irene took four first-place finishes in the girls 11-12 age group.

On the boys side, Nate Lanaville swam to four first-place finishes in the 13-14 division, as did teammate Ben Olson in three events in the 9-10 age group. First-year swimmer Ulric Neumeier, 6, saw time drops in several of his individual events.

“Ulric has been working really hard in practice,” Dykema said. “He’s seeing all that work pay off with nice drops in his times.”

Dykema also credited Tiffany Shiel, Reese Herioux, Rene Gardner and Aubrey Elliot for having personal-best times.

NLY visits Ashwaubenon, Wis. Sunday.
