HANNAHVILLE — The Hannahville boys shot the lights out here Wednesday night in a 73-39 basketball triumph over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears.

Hannahville drained a U.P.-record 24 3-point shots while improving to 7-3 overall and in the Northern Lights League.

“We had 20 at Mackinac Island last weekend and the boys wanted to go for the record,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “They had been real shy about shooting the ball. Now, they aren’t shy. We had been playing against a lot of zone and knew that was something we needed to improve upon. The guys were a lot more confident shooting the ball.”

Gage Sagataw, who sank seven 3-pointers, led the Soaring Eagles with 22 points. Joe Larson hit six trifectas and added 18 while Shaye Halfaday had 12. Travis Johnson scored 22 for the Black Bears (0-11 overall, 0-8 league).

“We’ve been doing a good job working the ball inside and we’re just trying to find a happy medium,” said Eagle. “We have a lot of kids who can play. It’s just a matter of getting them comfortable and ready for tournament time.”

The Big Bay girls beat Hannahville 59-3. Piper Jones led the way with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Meagan Yonker hit 12 points and Alix Bleau had 10 points and 11 boards.

Camryn Pederson also collected five steals for the league-leading Black Bears (10-2 overall, 9-0 NLL), who committed a season-low four turnovers.

Big Bay hosts Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter for homecoming tonight. Hannahville hosts Mackinac Island Friday and Saturday.
