Braves’ boys place 5th at U.P. Finals

MARQUETTE — Area teams finished well behind the leaders in Saturday’s Upper Peninsula Swim Finals here Saturday.

The Marquette girls retained their title with 377 points, followed by Sault Ste. Marie 300 and Houghton 156. Gladstone took seventh at 69 and Manistique was ninth with 16.

Gladstone’s Emily Marenger, Lydia Tembruell, Alexis Marenger and Megan Fritz combined for a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, and Tembruell took seventh in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley.

The Marquette boys captured their first title in three years with 344 points, followed by Sault 227 and Houghton 219. Gladstone edged Manistique 67-64 for fifth place.

Braves’ senior Levi Seaman placed fourth in 100 breaststroke and joined Camden Griggs, Wilson Zhao and Alex Williams on the fifth-place 200 medley relay.

“I am very happy and proud of the way the team swam at the Finals,” said Braves coach Tom Desy. “We have such a small team and have been on the short end of meets throughout the season, so it was great to see how well the boys and girls placed overall at Finals. It was a good way to end the swim season.”
