NORWAY — A fast paced transition game and fluent ball movement usually go together well. Bark River-Harris had that combination going for it on Monday night, as the Broncos rolled past Norway 63-24 in girls basketball action.

The Broncos had three players in double figures led by Cara Zawacki with 14 points. Sierra Debelak chipped in 13, while Grace Peterson netted 12.

Bark River built a 10-0 lead less than three minutes into the game before Kassie Gyselinck got the Knights on the scoreboard with two successful free throws.

Throughout the game, the Broncos all saw the floor well, constantly looking for the best open look in both transition and in half-court offensive sets. That’s something they’re accustomed to, noted head coach Matt Richer.

“We wanna play fast paced, get early shots with good looks at the basket,” Richer said. “The best way to beat zone defense is to get down the floor and get to the basket before the opposition can set it up.”

The Knights were in a zone defense to begin the game.

“I tell the girls, ‘You may have a good shot, (but) we want to get the ball to whoever is going to have a great shot in half-court offense,'” said Richer. “See the floor, see your teammates, make good passes. That’s how our offense flows best.”

The Knights, who fell to 1-17 on the season, dressed only seven players on the evening. Sophomore Kali Stanchina missed the game due to being in concussion protocol, though she is expected to be back in uniform next week.

“Tonight was frustrating for us, because we came off of two great performances in a row,” said Norway head coach Joe Tinti. “Plus, I don’t know what kind of curse looms over us, but teams seem to shoot the lights out against us. No matter who was in the game for them, they seemed to all be making shots.”

The Knights host Superior Central next Tuesday, which will be the first time the Cougars will play at Norway in girls basketball according to Tinti. He also noted that the Knights hope to finish out strong prior to season’s end.

The Broncos, who improved to 10-7 on the season, travel to Carney-Nadeau Thursday night for another Skyline Central Conference tilt.

In the JV game, Norway defeated the Broncos 52-40 to remain undefeated in conference play. Donna Van Holla and Andi Carlson each scored 13 points for the Knights, while Alaska Peterson led all scorers with 23 points for Bark River-Harris.
