Braves’ swimmers fall to Marquette in dual meet

MARQUETTE — Smaller numbers hurt the Gladstone swim team in a dual meet at Marquette Wednesday, as the Braves dropped a 132-45 decision to Marquette on the girls side and a 144-23 decision on the boys side.

“We have a small team, and the Marquette team is large and very good and could fill all the events,” Braves coach Tom Desy said. “On the plus side, the Braves swam very well tonight considering this is exam week. The kids kind of looked a little distracted during the warm-ups but put together some great swims. Most of the swimmers had best times tonight. We have been working on technique this past week — especially on turns — and it helped.”

Gladstone’s Emily Marenger, Alexis Marenger, Alex Williams, Isabelle Houseman and Marissa Onate had best times in both individual events.

Emily Marenger won the 100 backstroke and took third in 100 freestyle. Lydia Tembreull won 100 butterfly with a best time and was second in 100 breaststroke. Williams took second in 500 free and was third in the 200 individual medley. Houseman added a third in 200 free, Megan Fritz took third in 50 free, and Levi Seaman was third in 100 breaststroke.

The Braves host Kingsford and Manistique in a home triangular at the Northern Lights YMCA Friday.
