NMU men fall
MARQUETTE -- Poor defense in the second half doomed the Northern Michigan men's basketball team in an 80-75 non-conference home loss to Ripon College Saturday.
The Wildcats led 53-42 with 9:19 left to play before the Red Hawks (5-4) went on a 28-10 run to build a 70-63 advantage with 2:55 left.
Alec Fruin pulled NMU within 73-71 on a jumpshot with 1:26 to play, but that's as close as it would get.
Sam Taylor and Dolapo Olayinka led the Wildcats with 15 points each. Marcus Matelski added 12, while Myles Howard and Fruin each chipped in 10.
The Wildcats (4-7) host Ashland University Jan. 2.
Tech men roll
HOUGHTON -- North Central High School graduate Dawson Bilski scored the first nine points of the game and finished with 17 as the Michigan Tech men's basketball team rolled to a 117-60 home triumph over Algoma University, Ont. Saturday.
The Huskies (8-3), who shot 63 percent from the field, led 64-28 at halftime and didn't look back.
Kyle Monroe led the way with a season-high 30 points, followed by Bilski and Eric Carl with 15. Owen White chipped in 11.
