Huskies win finale

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech football team closed its season with a 34-21 win over Northwood University in GLIAC action here Saturday.

The Huskies (5-5, 3-5 GLIAC) shut Northwood (1-10, 1-7 GLIAC) out in the first half while accumulating 13 points.

Despite Northwood tallying 21 points in the second half, a 21-point Huskies’ fourth quarter sealed the game.

Will Ark completed 20-of-26 passes for the Huskies and collected 317 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Wenzlick notched 162 yards on six receptions with two TDs, and Jared Smith rushed 25 times for 172 yards. Emmett Boehler finished with 54 yards on nine carries and two TDs.

Nate LaJoie led the defense with seven tackles and one sack while Marshael Ryan finished with six tackles.

NMU falls to foe

ASHLAND, Oh. — The Northern Michigan University football team fell to Ashland University 31-10 here Saturday in its season finale.

Despite a field goal from Daniel Riser in the first quarter and a 34-yard rushing touchdown from Keshawn Howard in the second, the Wildcats (1-9) were unable to put any more points on the board against Ashland (7-4).

Howard finished with 87 yards and a TD for the Wildcats, and Tyshon King and Sebastian Toland both added 51. Ryan Knight collected 24 yards on two catches.

Isaac Darkangelo led the defense with 12 tackles, and Antonio Howard Jr. chipped in 10.

Tech icers sweep

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a sweep here Saturday with a 2-1 win over Lake Superior State University in WCHA action.

Brian Halonen took the lead early for the Huskies as the first period closed. The Lakers (4-10, 2-4 WCHA) tied it up up shortly after, but a second period goal from the Huskies’ Trenton Bliss sealed the game.

The Huskies (5-6, 3-5 WCHA) also beat the Lakers 4-2 Friday.

Two goals in the first from Bliss and Logan Ganie, and one in each of the subsequent periods earned the Huskies another win.

Bliss knocked it in the second, and Halonen scored in the third.

The Huskies host NMU Friday.

NMU icers split

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan hockey team was edged by the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks 3-2 here Saturday for a weekend split in WCHA action.

The Nanooks (7-7, 5-3 WCHA) scored twice in the first period, and despite goals from NMU’s Ben Newhouse and Ty Readman in the second, Alaska sealed the game with another goal.

The Wildcats (7-3-2, 5-1 WCHA) edged the Nanooks 2-1 Friday.

NMU kept Alaska out of the net for the first two periods, adding a goal in each thanks to Joseph Nardi.

NMU travels to Michigan Tech Friday.

Tech men fall

WINONA, Minn. — The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team was handed its first loss of the season, 62-59, by Winona State here Sunday.

The Huskies (2-1) fell behind 32-23 at the half.

It was nip-and-tuck in the second, with Tech eventually leading 56-52 with 3:14 left thanks to a triple from North Central High School’s Dawson Bilski.

A trey from Winona (1-3) gave it the lead with less than a minute left to seal the game.

Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 28 points, followed by Bilski with 14. Owen White collected 10.

The Huskies host Minnesota Duluth Saturday.

Tech women drop pair

MOOREHEAD, Minn. — The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team fell to MSU-Moorhead 76-50 here Saturday.

After leading at the beginning of the first quarter, the Huskies (1-3) were overpowered by the Dragons 28-8 in the second. Moorhead then stayed ahead for the remainder.

Cassidy Trotter led Tech with 14 points, and Katelyn Meister followed with 10.

The Huskies were edged by St. Cloud State University 65-61 Friday.

Tech was outscored by St. Cloud (2-0) in the first three quarters 44-38 and despite putting up 23 points in the fourth, was unable to dig itself out of the hole.

Sloane Zenner led the Huskies with 12 points, and Trotter, Ellie Welsh and Ellie Mackay all notched 10.

The Huskies travel to Minnesota State today.

NMU men split

DULUTH, Minn. — The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team finished Southwest Minnesota State 72-63 on the back of a strong second half here Saturday.

After being tied 30-30 at the half, the Wildcats outscored Minnesota 42-33 in the second half.

The Wildcats fell to Minnesota Duluth 84-62 Friday.

In a reverse of Saturday’s game, NMU’s opponent did the outscoring, 53-31, after ending the first half tied at 31.

NMU travels to Alaska Nov. 29.

NMU women fall

DULUTH, Minn. — The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team fell 45-32 here Saturday to the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The Wildcats were outscored in the first three quarters and were unable to overcome Minnesota’s defense.

NMU hosts St. Cloud State Saturday.
