BR-H sweeps Norway in district opener

Matt “Sweets” McCarthy | Iron Mountain Daily News Bark River-Harris’ Aspen Frederick prepairs to serve during Monday night’s district match at Norway.

NORWAY — Survive and advance — that’s the motto in postseason tournament play.

Monday night, in MHSAA Division 3 girls volleyball District 66 action, the Bark River-Harris Broncos swept the Norway Knights 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-12) on the road to advance to the semifinals. The Broncos will visit Gwinn Wednesday at 7 p.m. EST.

The first half of set No. 1 was highly competitive, with the Norway student section being loud and energetic. The Knights seemed to feed off the energy, keeping the score close until Tressa Ives of BR-H turn came up in the serving rotation. It was a one or two-point differential when Ives serving keyed the Broncos scoring run to a 17-11 lead, and they never looked back in the set.

Set No. 2 went back-and-forth and almost point-for-point nearly all the way through the set.

“We tend to come out flat in the second set, plus we made some mistakes that we don’t typically make, and Norway played very scrappy in that set. It definitely kept us reeling,” said Broncos’ head coach Jen Ives.

In the end, however, the Knights push wasn’t enough and BR-H prevailed.

The final set saw Norway start out very strong behind the serving of sophomore Alexis Paris, getting the Knights out to a 7-0 lead. It got the home crowd back in to the match, and it sparked head coach Erika Harnden’s Knights, but only for a brief time.

Before long, BR-H narrowed the Norway lead to 8-6 behind strong rallies and efficient serving from Selena Britton. BR-H went on to win the set and the match to advance.

Coach Ives noted her servers regrouped from a slow start to have a very successful night.

“Cara (Zawacki) served really well, as did Tressa and Selena. It ws key to us winning tonight,” she said.

The winner of Wednesday’s match will host the district final Thursday against the winner of Ishpeming at Manistique.
