No major changes in latest U.P. poll

Justin St. Ours | Daily Press Escanaba’s Josh Bruntjens breaks free from Marquette’s Desmond Mullen (22) on his way to a touchdown as teammate Bryant Maki (1) celebrates Sept. 21 at Escanaba. The Eskymos are ranked No. 3 in the latest poll ahead of their showdown at second-ranked Menominee Thursday night.

ESCANABA — With no real upsets or surprises in week five of the high school football season, there wasn’t much movement in the latest U.P. poll voted on by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Calumet remains No. 1 in the large school division, just one point ahead of second-place Menominee. Both teams received four first-place votes for the second straight week.

Escanaba bumped up to No. 3 following an impressive 31-8 bounce-back victory over Kingsford. The Eskymos visit Menominee Thursday in a game that will have huge implications in the Great Northern Conference race.

Marquette dropped to fourth after suffering a 19-14 setback against Petoskey, and Negaunee makes its first appearance in the poll at No. 5 after dropping Ishpeming 40-20.

The same five teams are in the top five in the small school division, with Iron Mountain remaining No. 1, West Iron County remaining No. 2 and Ishpeming still ranked No. 4. The only changes come at No. 3 and No. 5 as L’Anse and Lake Linden-Hubbell switched spots after the Purple Hornets took down the Lakes 14-0 to move into the No. 3 spot.

The top three teams all held their spots in the eight-player poll, starting with North Central at No. 1, Pickford at No. 2 and Forest Park at No. 3. The top-ranked Jets host the third-ranked Trojans Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT in a game that figures to be huge in the race for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Engadine took over the No. 4 spot after thrashing Superior Central 47-14, and Cedarville returns to the poll at No. 5 after dispatching previously fourth-ranked Brimley 48-6. Rapid River also earned its first vote following back-to-back wins after an 0-3 start.

In the Associated Press state poll, Escanaba dropped one spot to No. 9 in Division 4 and North Central remains No. 2 in eight-player.
