Emeralds rally past Norway

MANISTIQUE — Schyler Andersen scored on a one-yard touchdown run with three minutes left in the fourth quarter as Manistique rallied past Norway for a 19-14 victory on Senior Night here Friday in a WestPAC Iron Division contest.

Trailing 14-13, the Emeralds (3-5) recovered a Norway fumble and took over on the Knights’ 30-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, setting the stage for their go-ahead touchdown drive.

“We got a bounce at the end and put together our best drive,” Emeralds’ coach Todd Kangas said. “That was probably the best drive we had all night.”

The Knights had one last chance after converting on 4th-and-30 on their final drive. Sitting on the Emeralds’ 40 with 1:40 left to play, Andersen intercepted a pass at the 20 to seal the game.

“We’ve been competitive in all our games,” Kangas said. “The Westwood away game was probably our worst performance, but they have a really good team. We’ve been right there with everybody and won three of our four home games. Our home crowd has been fantastic, and it’s good for our seniors to get a win on Senior Night.”

Offense was everywhere in the first quarter. Andersen started the scoring on a 75-yard TD run with 11:20 left in the opening frame to put the Emeralds up 7-0. Norway responded on its next drive with a TD run by Gannon Bray to knot the score at 7-7.

Andersen then broke free again for a 70-yard TD run with 6:50 left in the first quarter, but the Knights scored on a 20-yard run by Ethan Sabotta to take a 14-13 lead with two minutes remaining in the period.

The score remained that way until Andersen’s one-yard plunge in the fourth.

“They gave us more of an inside running attack and we had to take what they gave us, but we hurt ourselves with some penalties,” Kangas said. “Defensively, we did a pretty good job matching up with them. They had a big tight end — Kody Hendricks — that made big some catches. He gave us some fits.”

The Emeralds, who finished the season 3-1 at home after not winning a game since 2016 entering this season, finish their season on the road at Lake Linden-Hubbell Oct. 26.

“Norway came in pretty even with us in terms of teams they beat and their record,” Kangas said. “It feels good to beat a team that you’re even with. That was good for us.

“Now, we’re going to try to get our first road win at Lake Linden-Hubbell. To be a good team, you got to be able to get road wins.”
