Broncos dominate Jets

POWERS — Despite a scrappy second set, the Bark River-Harris volleyball team swept the North Central Jets 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-14) here Monday in Skyline Central Conference action.

The Broncos (8-5) took a lead early in the first set and didn’t let up. The Jets repeatedly closed within two, but short service runs from Bark River’s Tressa Ives and Selena Britton maintained the lead. North Central had a final chance after a Broncos’ ball went into the net, but a double-hit penalty against the Jets ended the set.

“We have a younger team, so we’re constantly pushing fundamentals,” Broncos’ coach Jen Ives said. “Serving and serve receive is something we work on all the time. Our setter-hitter chemistry is coming along, and I think we saw that in the last set with Alaska (Peterson) and Makena (Lockwood). The chemistry is there, but we just need to give our setter good passes.”

The Jets gave a renewed push in the second set, staying within a single point before pulling ahead 13-11 after a short run from Bree Arsenault and a kill from Alex Neville. North Central (0-13) stayed ahead until a serve into the net gave possession back to Bark River with the Jets leading 20-16. A short run from the Broncos’ Alexis Berg then tied it at 21. A misplay from the Broncos gave it back to the Jets, but Lockwood tied it back up on the next point. The Broncos then pulled ahead by one, but a kill from Neville tied it at 24.

“We don’t lose our scrappiness,” Jets’ coach Rick Mick said. “We’ve been fighting harder and harder. The girls fought really tonight, but they had to because they didn’t bring their best tonight. I’ve never said that this entire season. I’ve felt like we’ve improved after every single match. This time, we fought really hard — and it kept us in it — but I didn’t see the fire that I saw last week. So, we’ve got to get that back.”

Bark River got possession back on a Jets’ serve into the net, and Ives finished the set with an ace.

“We kind of broke down in the second set,” coach Ives said. “Our serve receive was not there. Our serves weren’t there, and we broke down in our communication. North Central was scrappy, and they wouldn’t give us anything. They had to serve near 100 percent in that second set. It could have gone either way.”

The Jets led early in the third set, but a six-point run from Britton put the Broncos back on top. They never surrendered momentum and finished the set with an ace from Ives.

Bark River, which won the jayvee match 2-0, hosts Carney-Nadeau Thursday. North Central visits Stephenson tonight at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

“We’re going to be talking about this match and what we can do about it,” Mick said. “We’ll build on that. We don’t dwell in the negatives, ever. That’s what we’ll do tonight, and this one is an easy one to correct. It was attitude. We’ll bring more fire tomorrow — I guarantee it.”
