Tech falls to Eagles
ASHLAND, Oh. -- The Michigan Tech University football team fell 21-12 to the Ashland University Eagles here Saturday in a GLIAC matchup.
The Huskies entered the second half trailing 14-0.
Ashland punched another through Tech's defense to make it 21-0 with 6:52 remaining in the third.
Four minutes later, the Huskies (4-3, 2-3 GLIAC) got on the board with a 12-yard run from Jared Smith to cut their deficit to 21-6.
After an Eagles' field goal attempt was by blocked by Tech's Michael Munderloh in the fourth, Steele Fortress scored his first career touchdown on an eight-yard TD run. A failed two-point conversion left the score at 21-12 with 7:48 left. The Eagles (5-3, 4-2 GLIAC) then stalled the Huskies to seal the game.
Fortress finished with 156 yards through the air and 45 on the ground with one TD. Smith collected 77 on 12 carries, and William Marano had 59 yards on four catches. Jordan Ferguson added 58 on four catches while Ben Hartley finished with 56 on five.
Marshael Ryan led the defense with 10 tackles and Glacier Wallington finished with nine.
Tech hosts Ferris State Saturday.
NMU icers sweep
BIG RAPIDS -- The Northern Michigan University hockey team won 6-4 after a shootout with the Ferris State Bulldogs here Saturday in a WCHA contest.
Four Wildcats' goals in the first period from Mitchel Slattery, Adam Roeder, Griffin Loughran and Vincent de Mey gave NMU (4-1-1, 1-1-1 WCHA) a 4-1 lead entering the second.
Loughran added two more to complete a hat trick and seal the win.
The Wildcats beat the Bulldogs (2-3, 0-2 WCHA) 4-3 Friday for a win in their first conference game.
Tied 2-2 entering the third, NMU's Garrett Klee scored his first goal of the season to give the Wildcats the lead. NMU's Joseph Nardi then sealed the game with 13:15 left to play.
NMU hosts Alabama Huntsville this weekend.
Tech icers split
BOWLING GREEN, Oh. -- The Michigan Tech University hockey team buried the Bowling Green Falcons 4-2 thanks to a Tommy Parronttino hat trick here Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, Tech (3-3) took the lead with a goal from Parker Saretsky 5:46 into the second. The Falcons (4-3) scored a minute later, but Parronttino answered with two goals in the second and one in the third for a hat trick and his first goals of the season.
The Huskies fell 3-1 after a Falcons' rally Friday.
Tech's Trenton Bliss scored its only goal just over five minutes into the first. Bowling Green then scored three unanswered goals to finish the game.
Tech travels to North Dakota Saturday for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game.
