Rockets snatch first win of year in 2OT

RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River Rockets broke into the win column for the first time this season here Friday night, earning a 66-58 double-overtime football victory over the Cedarville Trojans.

Tyler Sundling scored on a four-yard run in the second overtime. The Rockets’ defense then forced a turnover to seal the verdict in this Great Lakes Eight Conference East Division match-up.

“They’re a good football team,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “They did some good things. Give credit to our kids for hanging tough and the coaching staff for all the help they provided.”

A TD run by Grant Fountain gave the Trojans a 58-52 lead in the first overtime. Sundling then caught a pass to extend the homecoming contest.

Cedarville took a 52-44 lead with two minutes, 51 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter before a five-yard pass reception by Griffin Flath pulled the Rockets even with 15 seconds left in regulation.

Sundling ran 16 times for 231 yards, including a 68-yard TD. He also caught three TD aerials and completed 5-of-8 passes for 43 yards and two TDs. Bryce Lundquist was 7-of-12 passing for 153 yards and three TDs. Mason Kudlick caught a TD aerial and completed his lone pass for 15 yards. Flath added 54 yards rushing on four carries and Parker Dausey caught a 50-yard pass for Rapid RIver’s first score.

The Rockets (1-3 overall, 1-2 East Division) gained 536 yards in total offense, including 326 on the ground.

Rapid River travels to Newberry Friday while Cedarville (2-2 overall, 1-1 East) visits third-ranked Brimley.
