Norse begin XC season

MEQUON, Wis. — The Bay College Norse got their cross country season underway here Saturday in the Ken Weidt Classic at Concordia College.

James Young, a sophomore from Gladstone, was Bay’s lone representative in the men’s race and covered the eight-kilometer course in 31 minutes, 17 seconds for the third best time of his career.

Lauren Peters, a sophomore from Munising, led the Bay women in the 6-K race at 35:51.4 and freshman Olivia Anderson of Menominee was clocked at 39:00.6 in her collegiate debut.

“Today’s meet went very well for our season-opener,” said Bay coach Jim Murtha. “The conditions were perfect and everyone gave a great effort and set a time to now work on improving throughout the season.”

The St. Norbert College men, who placed five in the top 10, were crowned champions. St. Norbert junior Joe Gasick of Libertyville, Ill. took the individual title.

Carleton College’s women, led by freshman and individual champion Clara Mayville of Manhatten, Kan., grabbed the top four spots and team title.

The Norse are idle until Sept. 28 when they visit Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.
