Hannahville wins pair

MACKINAC ISLAND — The Hannahville Soaring Eagles started their soccer season on a positive note this weekend, defeating the Mackinac Island Lakers 2-0 and 3-2.

Joe Larson scored twice, including the game-winner with five minutes left in Saturday’s contest and Xander Spry hit the first goal.

“Our midfield and fullback played real well,” said Hannahville coach Dan Kleikamp. “We didn’t know what to expect. This was the first time we had all 11 players on the field, but the kids came ready to go.”

Larson and Spry scored a goal apiece Friday for the Soaring Eagles, who fired 19 shots on goal in the first half.

“Their goaltender is phenomenal,” said Kleikamp. “We kept pushing the ball up the field and had a lot of shots, but he was tough.”

Mequon Jackson, who served as Hannahville’s goaltender in both matches, stopped a corner kick with 1 1/2 minutes left in Saturday’s match.

“That was a huge save,” said Kleikamp. “He came out of nowhere to make that save. That was a nice play.”

The Soaring Eagles visit Beaver Island for a pair of matches this weekend.
