Esky tennis takes down Maroons, 6-2

MENOMINEE -- The Menominee girls tennis team fell 6-2 to Escanaba on Tuesday in its final tune-up match before the Great Northern Conference finals meet today in Kingsford.
The Maroons only two wins came at Nos. 1 and 2 singles as Jenna Nolde topped Esky's Jasmine Clark 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Josie Hofer defeated Jacey Moreau 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
"A great match from Jacey Moreau today despite a loss," Esky coach Chris Ogren said. "She played very good tennis and fought back in the second."
After those two matches, the Eskymos got the better of Menominee in the remaining six starting with Ukiah Penegor defeating Autumn Erickson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Amber Yang beating Myah Camps 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
"We didn't play very well at all today," Menominee coach Nikki Mathieu said. "Hopefully we rid ourselves of all the spider webs from (Tuesday) going in to GNC's."
In doubles play, Meghan Francour and Emma Anderson fell to Esky's Maddy Ide and Alison Sommers 4-6, 7-5, 1-6 at No. 1; Milena LaVia and Lauren Cayley-Nelson lost 4-6, 0-6 to Laura Sliva and Anna Branstrom at No. 2; the No. 3 team of Rylee Doyle and Bella LaVia played tough but eventually were topped 5-7, 4-6 to Maddy Mishica and Gracie Wickham and Kennedy Olson and Anna Nerat won one game 6-3 but lost the other two 3-6, 4-6 to Rylee Kuehl and Ashley Sylvester at No. 4.
"Good team win today going into the conference tournament tomorrow," Ogren said. "The doubles were able to get a sweep despite two three-set matches."
Menominee will see Escanaba today in Kingsford at the GNC Finals meet, and Mathieu told her team this is the time to show everyone else what they can do.
"(Today) is going to be very tough for us. I told the girls this is the time for Menominee to upset everyone," she said. "We need to dream about how we want to play, forget about the match today because it's done and over with and now is when all the hard work we put in during the season pays off. We need to play our game, play smart and just go out and do what we know we can do."
