Emeralds roll to sweep

Teresa Proudfit | Iron Mountain Daily News Manistique’s Kayla Muth (7) jumps to block a shot during Monday’s match at Iron Mountain.

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Manistique Emeralds continued their winning ways here Monday, sweeping to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-13) volleyball victory over Iron Mountain.

“We played pretty strong tonight,” Emeralds’ coach Amy Nixon said. “We put up a big front at the net as far as blocking goes, which made it difficult for them to get any offense going. We put a lot of pressure on them with our offense and didn’t give them the chance to attack much.”

Lenna Smith led the Emeralds (17-1-2) with 14 kills and 10 digs while Emilee McDaniel chipped in with eight kills, three blocks and three aces. Erin LaBar added 28 assists, Madison Zellar had six digs and Brooke Richey served three aces.

“Offensively, we really spread it out and we were able to get several girls the ball to attack, which makes it difficult for defenses because they can’t just key on one hitter,” Nixon said. “Iron Mountain has a scrappy team. I think they’ll win some games this season.”

The Emeralds, who also won the jayvee contest 2-1, host Ishpeming tonight at 7.
