Black Bears grab first win against Eagles

GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears earned their first volleyball victory of the season here Tuesday, taking a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-10) decision from the Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter Eagles.

“I was really proud of all the girls tonight,” said Big Bay coach Angie Paulson. “We had a few girls come into the match with bumps and bruises from playing soccer prior, and they didn’t let that stop their momentum. We’ve really been practicing covering our blockers, shifting the ball and finding the holes on the other side of the net and it all came together tonight.”

Meagan Yonker led the Black Bears with 15 service aces, four kills and 12 digs. Alix Bleau and Emma Flegel added four aces apiece.

“Meagan dominated the third set,” said Paulson. “Piper Jones brought us back from behind in the second set with consistent serves and the rest of the girls played the game the way they know how to come back and win.”

Yonker opened the third set with 14 consecutive service points, including eight aces.

“That really set the tone for the game and the girls were ready to fight for the win,” said Paulson. “We had good volleys. We called the ball and covered when we needed to do so, so I have no complaints from tonight.”

Big Bay de Noc — Yonker (15 aces, four kills, 12 digs); Flegel (four aces, one kills); Bleau (four aces, one assist, four digs); Matheny and Jones (one ace).
