Bruce, Berg win Gladstone 10-K runs

Justin St. Ours | Daily Press Runners participating in the MISH Waterfront Half-marathon take off from the starting line Saturday in Gladstone.

GLADSTONE — Adam Bruce continued to set a blistering pace in area road races here Saturday as he captured the top prize in the MISH Waterfront 10-kilometer run.

The recent Gladstone High School graduate covered the 6.2-mile course in a personal-best 32 minutes, 36.2 seconds, followed by John Bauman of Escanaba (39:00) and Robert Kilmer of Round Lake, Ill. (43:05.8) on the sunny and warm morning.

“I felt the heat on the way back,” said Bruce, clocked at 16 minutes at the halfway point. “I was happy with my 5-K split and the way I stuck with it in the second half. My goal was to break 33. I’m happy with that for this early in the summer. It was awesome to get the community together for this event.”

Zoie Berg of Gladstone took the women’s crown at 47:08.5, followed by Cheryl Pitchford of Grand Ledge, Mich. (49:12.5) and Lily Karl of Gladstone (51:31.2).

“I was surprised,” said Berg, who’s taking summer classes at Bay College.

“I thought I’d be running an eight-minute pace today and did 7:35. I didn’t want to go out too fast and had a faster 5-K coming in. My nursing classes have kept me busy and my training hasn’t been too consistent. This is a nice race. Everybody was smiling and people were cheering us on.”

Andy Daykin of Fox Point, Wis. won the half-marathon at 1:26:38.2, followed by Brendan Delaney of Gaylord (1:29:16.5) and David Johnson of Kingston, Mich. (1:35:11.3).

“The heat definitely made a difference,” said Daykin, who’s training for the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee this fall. “I felt it a little right away, although the light breeze off the lake cooled us off a little. It’s really beautiful up here. I like hiking in the woods. It’s a good way to unwind.”

Tracy Spaulding of Coraopolis, Pa. took the women’s title in 1:39:31. She was followed by Amanda West of Sault Ste. Marie (1:44:44.3) and Mindy Davenport of Escanaba (1:47:50.5).

“I looked at the results from last year and hoped to take first,” said Spaulding, a former Hyde resident. “It was a little warm, but it was good. I’m a marathon runner. I wanted to push the pace.”

Temperatures near 70 greeted the field of nearly 225 runners.
