Braves extend win streak with sweep of Kingsford

KINGSFORD — The Gladstone baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of Kingsford in Great Northern Conference action here Tuesday.

The Braves (13-5) won the opener 11-1 in five innings after scoring six runs in the final frame.

Carson Shea led the charge, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Cody Frappier and Cooper Cavadeas each had two hits and Ian Schwalbach had two RBIs.

Drake Forrest earned the win, giving up one run on two hits through three innings. He struck out three and walked two. Schwalbach pitched the final two frames in relief, surrendering one hit and fanning two.

“Both guys pitched really well. Drake’s curveball was really good. He was around the strike zone and had good control of his location,” Braves’ coach Kelly Shea said. “Schwalbach closed it out and he pitched really well too. He was also throwing hard and right around the strike zone.”

The Braves also took the nightcap 11-2 after jumping out to a 4-1 lead after two innings.

They extended their lead to 8-1 in the fourth.

Gladstone had just six hits, but they were helped out by four Flivvers’ errors.

“They were really struggling pitching. Their first guy had six walks. Errors and base-on-balls were what doomed them,” coach Shea said.

Dan Martin hit a two-run homer to rightfield in the fourth and Frappier added two hits and two RBIs. Zach Hanson earned the win, giving up two runs on two hits through four innings. He fanned four and walked five. Jared Crow came on in relief and didn’t allow a hit over the final two frames while punching out four.

“Zach, uncharacteristically gave up five walks, but that happens. All in all, he still pitched well,” coach Shea said.

“That was Jared Crow’s best outing of the year. He’s been struggling with control problems. He was the Jared Crow of old, that’s for sure.”

Coach Shea is happy with the way his team is playing.

“We’re playing really good right now and not taking anybody for granted. Like I tell the guys, just do your job That’s what we’re doing and we’re playing really nice right now,” he said.
