Norse win a pair

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — The Bay College softball team shutout the College of DuPage Chaparrals 8-0, then got a 5-4 walk-off win in extra innings against Owens Community College.

Lexi Winling pitched a complete game in the opener, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out six.

The Norse took the lead in the bottom of the first. Eve LaFleche doubled to start the inning, and scored on an Emily Bruntjens single. With two outs Richelle Vandeville singled to right to bring Bruntjens in.

The Norse pulled away with an offensive explosion in the fifth.

Vandeville ended the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Bruntjens went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double.

Bay jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second game before the Express put a threat together in the fifth that tied the game at 4.

Jerrika McAlpine led off the bottom of the seventh for the Norse with a walk. On the very next pitch, Aubree Saunders doubled to left and McAlpine scored all the way from first to end the game.

Rhiley Hubert started for the Norse, giving up four runs. However, just one of them was earned. She scattered eight hits and struck out one.

Winling worked the final two and one-third for the win, striking out two. Saunders was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

The Norse (7-1) wrap up their spring trip today. They start with an 11:30 a.m. rematch with College of DuPage, and then face Spoon River College at 2 p.m.
