HARRIS — Once it gets rolling, the Bark River-Harris girls basketball team can be tough to stop. The Broncos proved that again with a convincing 70-43 victory over Skyline Central rival Carney-Nadeau here Thursday night.
After Carney’s Layla Blahnik-Thoune tripled to tie the score at 18 with 6:37 left in the second quarter, the Broncos went on a 13-0 run to help build a 37-24 halftime lead.
They picked up right where they left off in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolves 24-8 to take a 61-32 lead into the fourth. That included a 20-4 spurt over the final 6:27 of the period.
“It’s been a season-type thing for us,” BR-H coach Josh Eagle said. “When we keep our heads up and move the ball on the offense, we’re a much better team. When we start throwing the ball away we have a tendency to hang our heads and not play as a team. Tonight we were getting out in transition, ran the floor and moved the ball well. When we did that we blew it open.”
The Broncos (13-2, 10-1 SC) were led by senior forward Lauryn Bloniarz, who scored a season-high 16 points. Grace Peterson and Hailee Demers each added 14, while Cassidi Stannard chipped in with 11.
“I think we had four scorers in double-figures tonight,” Eagle said. “We thrive off of that when everyone scores.”
The fourth-ranked Wolves (9-4, 9-4 SC) were able to keep it close early by going inside to Blahnik-Thoune and Sandra Boulton. They also had some success breaking the Broncos’ press, coming back from a 16-9 deficit with two minutes left in the opening frame to temporarily tie the game at 18.
“We had some success inside and off of their press,” Wolves’ coach Kris Blahnik said.
“I think our biggest problem was we let it get to us mentally. Our guards were a little shy and we struggled getting the ball inside to our bigs.
“We played good defense and stopped them for awhile, but then we let it get out of control. The third quarter has been our weakness all season. We’ve been talking about trying to come out with more fire.”
The ball movement of the Broncos was crisp, allowing them to coast and get everyone some playing time.
“We’re trained to do that,” Eagle said.
“It’s a chemistry thing — we hoped to be getting here about 10-15 games in. Cassidi transferred back (from Escanaba) and we brought up a couple freshman. We look to constantly cut and set back screens. Generally, we like to play 9-10 deep but it was nice to be able to play all 12.”
Blahnik-Thoune led all scorers with 20 points for the Wolves, while Boulton chipped in with 14.
The Broncos, who won the jayvee game 62-44, visit fifth-ranked North Central Monday. C-N hosts Superior Central Monday.
