Braves’ swimmers fall to Marquette

Dennis Grall | Daily Press Alexis Marenger of Gladstone approaches calm water as she navigates the 100 yard butterfly race at the Delta County YMCA Wednesday against Marquette.

ESCANABA — The Gladstone High School boys swim team gave a talented Marquette squad a good battle here Wednesday before sinking at the end. The Marquette girls won their portion of the meet a little easier.

The Marquette boys won 87-79, with a couple of events decided by slender margins that helped dictate the outcome. The girls won 118-51.

The Gladstone boys won two relay events, with Isaac Berthaume, Colby Toivinen, Nick LeClaire and Tyler Barteld taking the 200 medley and Berthaume, Torvinen, Barteld and Peter Noblet winning the 200 free relay.

Berthaume also won the 100 butterfly.

Sydney Herioux (100 breaststroke) and Abby Rouleau (100 butterfly) won their races and came close in other races. Herioux lost the 50 free by 3/10ths of a second and Rouleau was out-touched by 4/100ths in 200 IM.

“The Gladstone girls team swam very well, with some good times and some best times, but it wasn’t enough,” said coach Tom Desy.

“The boys team had a good meet also. There were a couple of events that were close and if they would have gone our way would have made the score much closer.”

The Braves swim at Manistique Monday.
