Emeralds power along

HARRIS — Manistique showed its dominance with four players hitting double digit kills to sweep Bark River-Harris 3-0 in the opening round of Division 3 district volleyball play here Monday.

The Emeralds came out firing and blitzed the Broncos 25-10 in the opening set.

Led by junior middle hitters Leanna Smith and Emilee McDaniel with four kills each, the Emeralds dominated early play before BR-H came back and made it close in the next two sets.

“I was really happy with our first set,” said Manistique coach Amy Nixon.

“We always come out hot and were doing what we needed to do and were playing well. We took our foot off the gas and started making poor decisions.”

Bark River-Harris (7-7) came back strong in the second and third sets, leading 17-14 in the second led by two solo blocks from senior Makena Lockwood and two strong serving runs.

Manistique came all the way back to win set two 25-19 on an eight-point serving run by Jenni Chartier, including two aces, and Smith contributed four kills.

BR-H had big leads in the third set at 16-5 and 18-12, before the Emeralds came roaring back to complete the sweep, winning the final set 25-22.

The Broncos had seven seniors playing in the final match of their volleyball careers, and it was an emotional ending to the season for coach Brooke Jorasz.

“I’ve been coaching these girls since the seventh grade, so this (last match) was really hard,” said Jorasz.

“They (Manistique) have real strong hitters and the biggest thing for us is to make sure you are blocking them. We held our own tonight and I am very proud of them.”

Bark-River Harris seniors include: Cameron Peterson, Hailee Demers, Lilian Stenberg, Madison Draze, Lauryn Bloniarz, Eden Oswald and Cierra Ouradnik.

Manistique (13-3) was led by Smith’s 13 kills and five service aces.

McDaniel had 12 kills, Chartier 10 and Kayla Muth 10.

Setter Joslyn Muth had a game-high 38 assists to lead the Emeralds’ offensive passing.

Manistique advances to the district semi-final Wednesday at Westwood.
