Hebert to defend state golf title

BATH — Scott Hebert returns Monday to defend his championship at the Michigan PGA Section Match Play Championship at Eagle Eye Golf Club.

The Escanaba native needed 19 holes to win last year, beating John Seltzer at the 16th section finals, giving Hebert a record-setting 16th Michigan Section major championship. He had shared the mark of 15 with Jeff Roth and Al Watrous.

His first Michigan PGA Match Play title gave Hebert the career grand slam of Michigan majors. He has also won eight Michigan PGA Professional titles, six Michigan Open crowns and a Tournament of Champions title.

In addition, he won the national PGA Professional championship at Reynolds, Ga. Plantation.

There are six former Match Play champions in the field, including five-time former Match Play champion Brian Cairns and reigning Michigan PGA Professional champion Lee Houtteman.

Other former Match Play winners include Seltzer, Ron Beurmann and Kyle Martin.

Round of 16 matches and the quarterfinal round will be played Monday, with the semifinals and finals Tuesday
