Broncos split with Norway

Prep softball

HARRIS — This is one split the Bark River-Harris Broncos are more than happy with.

The Broncos made a little bit of school history Thursday, earning a 2-0 softball victory over the Norway in the first game of a doubleheader, marking the first time they’ve beaten the Knights.

“It was so exciting,” said BR-H head coach Jen Goodrich. “We were 0-13 against them before tonight. We’re finally jelling as a team. It felt like everybody was playing as a unit. It was awesome.”

Norway won the nightcap 18-12.

Eden Oswald belted his first home run this season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning of the opener.

She was also the winning pitcher, tossing a three-hitter, striking out 12 and walking two.

“Eden made a lot of smart reads,” said Goodrich. “We made two errors, but they didn’t capitalize.”

Centerfielder Bonnie Cortinas made a key defensive play in the sixth, robbing Norway’s Kayte Casanova of a possible solo home run at the fence in the sixth.

“That was an awesom play by Bonnie,” said Goodrich. “That certainly could have given them some momentum.”

Eden Oswald pitched the first two innings of the nightcap. Esther Oswald, who relieved in the third, fanned two, walked two and gave up 13 hits.

“They’re a hitting team,” said Goodrich. “As a freshman, we felt we needed to see what Esther could do against their hitters. We also started a freshman catcher (Lexi Berg) and it felt good to stay competitive with them. There was definitely more offense for both teams in the second game.”

Mariah Gyselinck collected four hits and Cassanova added three hits, including a double, for Norway in Game 2.

BR-H’s Cheridan Peterson had three hits, including a double, and reached base all five times. Cortinas scored three runs on a single, double and triple.

“Cheridan was definitely a great hitter tonight,” said Goodrich.

The Broncos (5-7) host Munising in a twinbill today at 4.
