NEGAUNEE — Gladstone dominated Saturday at Lakeview Memorial Gym in Negaunee, winning the overall team title at the Mid-Peninsula Conference Championship high school wrestling meet by accumulating 212.5 points.

Westwood took second with 146.5 points, followed by Ishpeming with 79, then Iron Mountain, Negaunee, Gwinn and Manistique.

Gladstone head coach Dan Seronko was pleased and said the meet helped his team tune up before team and individual districts to be held in the coming week.

“The kids did well,” he said. “It’s nice to get a little competition in with the districts coming around on Wednesday. We’ve got to go downstate and face Grayling, so this is a good primer for it.

“The kids wrestled well, they’re preparing themselves well and they’re showing it out on the mats.”

The Braves won eight of 14 championship matches, including the 152-pound final when Brody Sanville defeated Carter Guidebeck of Westwood by a pin in the second round.

“I hadn’t wrestled all day so I was pretty fresh,” he said. “I went out there, wrestled smart, went behind him and put the legs in and eventually pinned him.”

Another highlight of the day was the Patriots’ Nathan Brewer defeating Ishpeming’s Christian Carello by major decision after the second round.

Westwood had eight athletes wrestle for titles, and head coach Dan Carlson was satisfied with his team’s performance.

“We fell behind Gladstone and lost a few in our consolation (rounds) that we should have picked up, but all in all we’re doing pretty good,” he said. “We knew we were chasing behind Gladstone and hoping to catch them, but it wasn’t our day.”

With Ishpeming’s third-place finish, head coach Tim Hares was upbeat.

“We had five in the finals, so that’s pretty good,” he said. “We’re young, they’re all learning and overall it’s been a good day. Any time you get five kids in the finals in the conference meet, it’s good. We’re happy with that.”

The Hematites’ Alaric Martin defeated Iron Mountain’s Caleb Burklund in the finals at 171. Another Ishpeming wrestler, Bailey Cadeau, was defeated by Westwood’s Sam Gilles for the 189 crown.

Other local finals results include Westwood’s Tyler Lindholm defeating Negaunee’s Finn Helppi at 130, while the Patriots’ Joseph DeRocha, Wyatt Carlson, Brandon Perry and Rocco Carlson; Negaunee’s Jeremy Hill; and Ishpeming’s Andre Walsh and Jessup Delongchamp reached the finals and finished as runners-up.

Team districts will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, with individual districts all being set for Saturday.
