Mid Peninsula’s Daisy Englund (10) puts up a shot over Carney-Nadeau’s Ashley Theoret (21) on a fast break during the first half Friday at Mid Pen.
ST. NICHOLAS — The Carney-Nadeau and Mid Peninsula girls’ basketball teams were locked in a defensive battle Friday night as the Wolves pulled out a 28-27 victory in a Skyline Central Conference matchup.
“I don’t know if it was good defense or poor offense,” said Mid Pen coach Bobby Reichel. “We’re just not scoring and we need to score more.”
Both teams had poor shooting nights with the Wolves (7-3) shooting 27 percent and the Wolverines (4-6) shooting 23 percent.
C-N jumped out to a big 7-1 lead to start the game and seemed to be in complete control.
“It’s huge,” C-N coach Travis Depuydt said of his team’s big start. “They came out with intensity and fire. They came back in the end but we kept it.”

Mid Peninsula’s Kennedy Englund (23) gets in defensive position while Carney-Nadeau’s Sarah Sivula takes the ball up the court during the first half Friday at Mid Pen.
Mid Pen settled down and began creating some offense as it came all the way back to take an 11-9 lead into the second quarter.
“We started moving the ball a little bit better,” said Reichel. “Daisy Englund provided a lot of energy for us tonight and played well especially in the first quarter.”
Both teams stayed close in the second quarter and were tied at 13 for much of the period until a basket by Sarah Sivula with just a few seconds left gave C-N a slim 15-13 lead heading into halftime.
The game stayed tight in the third quarter with both teams going basket-for-basket as the Wolves took a 24-21 lead going into the final frame.
The Wolverines did their best to try and gain the lead in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Wolves by two but it wasn’t enough in a game that saw little scoring.
“It’s kind of a testament of how our season’s been going,” said Depuydt. “A lot of our wins have been eight points or less. In the past we weren’t winning these close games. With more experience this year we’ve come out on top.”
Sivula was the leader for the Wolves tonight with 11 points and Sarah Jackson followed with eight points.
“Sarah Sivula is starting to become more aggressive,” said Depuydt. “The last few games she hasn’t been aggressive but she was able to get into the lane and finish tonight.”
Haley Trudell led Mid Pen with 12 points while D. Englund added 7.
C-N will host North Central Monday while Mid Pen travels to Superior Central the same night.
Mid Peninsula — Trudell 12, D. Englund 7, Croasdell 4, K. Englund 4; FT: 8-13; F: 13; Fouled out: K. Englund; 3-point field goals: Trudell 2, D. Englund 1.
