KINGSFORD — Gladstone’s five-year championship reign in the Ray Mariucci Invitational wrestling tournament ended Saturday as it finished runner-up to Marquette.
The Redmen scored 210 1/2 points in the 18th annual tourney. Gladstone finished with 203. Westwood took third at 139 1/2 and Bark River-Harris was sixth with 61.
“The kids wrestled well, only we came up a little short in the team standings,” said Gladstone coach Dan Seronko. “Eight of our 11 wrestlers were in the finals. Doby Gillis had the best match of the day, upsetting Sam Gilles of Westwood.”
Gillis avenged two earlier losses by pinning Gilles three minutes into the 189-pound final.

Eight wrestlers participated from Bark River-Harris. Kyle Adams earned third place at 125 pounds, Mason Ray earned fourth place at 135 pounds, Tyler Racicot earned third place at 140 pounds and Devin Racicot earned third place at 215 pounds.
The Braves travel to Ishpeming Wednesday. BR-H hosts Munising and Menominee Tuesday.

Campbellsport Invitational
CAMPBELLSPORT, Wis. — The Escanaba Eskymos ran into stiff competition, finishing 1-4 in the Campbellsport Invitational.
Luxemburg-Casco, the top-ranked Divison 2 team in Wisconsin, took the team title.
Esky, which wrestled to a 40-40 draw with West Allis Central, edged the Badger State squad on a tie-breaker.
The Eskymos opened with a 66-6 loss to fifth-ranked Slinger (D-2), then bowed to L-C 71-9 before its lone victory. They also fell to 11th-ranked Random Lake (D-3) 52-27 and Campbellsport 39-27.
“That was one of the tougher tournaments we’ve been in for a while,” said Esky coach Jeff Wright. “We had a few injuries, but it was a good learning experience for us. There’s not many places you can go and get five dual meets of that caliber. I think that can help us for the U.P. Championships (Saturday in Marquette).”
Esky’s Hunter Larson finished 4-1 at 138 pounds and Justin Mathieson (120) was 3-1.
“Hunter’s only loss was to a senior from Slinger (6-4), who’s the top-ranked wrestler in D-1,” said Wright. Brodey Bevins (113) was 1-4, but wrestled real well. He was in a brutal weight class. The four kids he lost to were all ranked in Wisconsin. Up and down our lineup we saw some great competition, but the kids didn’t back down.
The Eskymos host Negaunee and Kingsford Wednesday.
