Gladstone burns Emeralds

GLADSTONE — It’s amazing nobody dispatched the fire department to Gladstone High School Friday night.

The nets were on fire as Gladstone shot the lights out in an 89-34 Mid-Peninsula Conference contest.

It was no five-alarm situation, but the Braves (2-0, 2-0) shot a sizzling 63 percent from the field and made 14 3-pointers. Reece Castor and Rudy Peterson could have been singled out as basketball arsonists as they each swished five three pointers and finished with 24 points and 19 points, respectively, for the hot Braves.

“The other night we were 10-of-25 from three and tonight 14-of-23,” Gladstone coach Dane Quigley said. “That is some pretty good shooting. I knew I had a lot of good shooters coming in. It makes the game a whole lot easier when you have shooters like that because you can get the inside-outside game going. We are pretty hard to stop.”

“I kind of expected some of them,” Manistique coach Ed Marietti said about Gladstone torching his team from the perimeter. “I didn’t know how many they had. I knew Castor was going to launch them and Peterson came out and hit five in the first half. It’s a hard matchup for us.”

Ironically, Manistique (0-2, 0-2) took early 2-0 and 5-4 leads in the first quarter. But it was just a matter of time before the Braves heated up their shooting hands.

Gladstone connected on seven 3-pointers en route to a 28-7 first-quarter lead and had 11 triples in building a 56-15 halftime lead.

“I was happy somewhat in the first quarter and then halfway through all of a sudden,” Marietti said. “Once they get the big lead they get even more relaxed. We didn’t do much on the offensive side. We weren’t very aggressive and we were kind of slow. We have to get better.”

Gladstone outscored the Emeralds 33-19 in the second half to finish the first week of the season with two impressive victories.

Castor also had six rebounds and three assists and Owen Hanson, who came off the bench to score 11 points, and Carson Shea each had three of Gladstone’s 14 steals.

Gladstone had a truly unselfish night with 23 assists. This was a night do-everything senior Brad Spindler only scored two points, but he played Santa Claus by dishing out a team-high five assists, followed by Quinn Downey with four and Shea with two.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a team with so much talent on it, play so unselfishly,” said Quigley, whose team also kept the heat on Manistique with its full-court run-and-jump press. “I just haven’t seen it. Everybody in the U.P. knows the guys who are getting the most shots. Tonight, Brad wasn’t hitting, so he’s dishing it and passing it. As a coach it gives you the warm fuzzies.”

Kanton Lauzon led the Emeralds with eight points, with Anderson Schyler chipping in with seven points. Kyle Seeley grabbed a team-high four rebounds and Logan Pawley and Lauzon each had three assists.

Manistique was burned by 26 turnovers and shot 24 percent from the field.

Gladstone, which won the jayvee game 77-13, plays at Marquette Tuesday. Manistique hosts Gwinn Friday.

“We are just trying to get better,” Marietti said. “We have to get more consistent. We didn’t really hustle back tonight. I was disappointed in that.”
