KINGSFORD — The Escanaba volleyball team had to reach deep Tuesday night to rally for a 3-2 Great Northern Conference win at Kingsford.
The Flivvers were sharp early, but the Eskymos regrouped to pull off the victory — 14-25, 25-6, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-4.
“They are a great team and great competition who cover the floor well,” Esky coach Adam Lambert said about Kingsford. “They like to quick set the middle, but we were able to defend and bring our own attacks.”
The Eskymos (2-1) had a strong night of serving at nearly a 90 percent clip.
Paige Wendt and Taleise Lawrence led the Esky attack with 12 and eight kills, respectively.
Lambert also cited setters Kaitlyn Lord, Morgan Heidt and Kaleia Lawrence for a solid job running Esky’s aggressive offense.
Escanaba returns to action Thursday at Stephenson for a scheduled match at 6 p.m. (EDT).
Carney-Nadeau 3, Stephenson 1
CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves were tested Tuesday night, but prevailed in a 3-1 (25-12, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20) volleyball triumph over the Stephenson Eagles.
“I thought we played real well defensively,” said Carney coach Steve Kedsch. “Our offense struggled a little, but our serving picked us up. Stephenson is a very good defensive team. We had a hard time finding the floor against them.”
Carney’s Talisha McCullough and Breanne Bedgood hit six service aces apiece. Sara Sivula recorded eight kills and Layla Blahnik-Thoune had 19 assists.
Sivula and Sarah Jackson were the defensive leaders with 20 digs each. Bedgood added 19 and Alanis Harris had 16.
“We had 100 digs tonight and Stephenson probably had as many,” said Kedsch. “It was a good defensive match.”
Carney, which also won the jayvee match (25-10, 25-19), visits North Dickinson Thursday.
The summary:
Carney-Nadeau — McCullough (six aces, nine assists, 12 digs); Bedgood (six aces, two kills, 19 digs); Harris (three aces, three kills, 16 digs); Sivula (two aces, eight kills, 20 digs); Jackson (five kills, 20 digs); Belec (five kills); Blahnik-Thoune (19 assists, 11 digs).
