Wolves clamp down on Stephenson

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves turned in a strong defensive effort here Friday to upend Stephenson 49-38 in a non-conference girls basketball game.

Ashley Theoret set the pace, clamping down on Autumn Rasner and holding her to three points.

“She denied her (the ball),” said C-N coach Travis Depuydt.

“When she caught the ball on the wing she was right up in her face.

“She had no open looks and had contested shots when she drove.”

Layla Blahnik-Thoune also turned in a solid rebouding performance, coming in when Taylor Linder sustained a first quarter knee injury that required her to be taken to the hospital.  “She did a great job keeping (Kylie) Cross off the boards,” said Depuydt. “Keeping her off the glass was a big key to our win.”

Sarah Sivula led the C-N offense with a season-best 21 points. The Wolves hit 19-of-49 field goals, with Blahnik-Thoune getting 11 points and Theoret adding 10 points.

“Sivula was tentative at Crystal Falls,” Depuydt said of Tuesday’s game.

“We knew Stephenson would play a zone and we worked on getting movement and attacking the zone. She did a good job of that. The second half they collapsed on her and she kicked it out.”

Cross and Kennedy Tharp had 11 points apiece for the Eagles.

Carney, which goes to Superior Central Tuesday, won the jayvee game 42-39.
