Traditions That Unite Us

Minding our own business

From Fourth of July fireworks to fair week traditions, it's the moments we share that bring our community together.

As communities across America prepare to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, it’s a fitting time to reflect on what has always made this country special. Certainly, it’s our history, our freedoms, and the people who have served to protect them. But it’s also something a little closer to home, our communities.

For 250 years, America has been built one town at a time. Main Streets, county fairs, local businesses, volunteer organizations, and community celebrations have woven together the fabric of our nation. These are the places where neighbors become friends, traditions are passed from one generation to the next, and memories are made.

That’s what chambers of commerce have always been about. While we often focus on economic development, supporting businesses, and welcoming visitors, our mission has always extended beyond commerce. Strong businesses create strong communities, and strong communities create places where people want to live, work, raise families, and visit.

That’s also why the Delta County Chamber is proud to manage the operations of the U.P. State Fair. For generations, the fair has celebrated agriculture, showcased local talent, supported businesses, and created opportunities for families and friends to gather. It is more than an annual event, it’s one of the traditions that helps define our community.

This year’s U.P. State Fair theme, “United in Fun,” couldn’t be more appropriate. At first glance, it may sound like a celebration of rides, concerts, livestock shows, and fair food, and it certainly is. But it’s also a reminder that some of life’s most meaningful moments happen when we come together.

Whether you’re cheering on a young exhibitor, reconnecting with old friends, listening to live music, or simply enjoying an elephant ear while watching children experience the midway for the first time, the fair brings together people from every corner of the Upper Peninsula. Different backgrounds. Different generations. Different stories. For one week, we’re simply neighbors sharing a tradition that has connected communities for generations.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let’s also celebrate the people, places, and traditions that continue to strengthen our communities. Our local businesses. Our volunteers. Our civic organizations. Our families. And yes, the fairs and community celebrations that remind us we belong to something bigger than ourselves.

Here’s wishing everyone a safe and memorable Fourth of July. We look forward to welcoming you back in August as we celebrate the traditions that unite us – United in Fun – at the U.P. State Fair.
