Public comment at meeting’s conclusion would be beneficial
Letter to the Editor
As someone who has had the privilege of serving our community on the Gladstone City Commission (2015-16) and the Delta County Commission (2023-24), I have always believed in the value of open government and constructive public involvement.
During my time in office, I observed that residents often have their most relevant feedback after they have had the chance to hear a full board discussion. When a meeting allows for a brief comment period at the end of the agenda, it provides immediate clarity for the public and helps leaders stay connected to the community’s real-time reactions. Many boards across Delta County successfully use this structured approach to strengthen the relationship between residents and their elected officials.
Currently, Gladstone’s structure requires anyone wishing to respond to a night’s discussion to wait two full weeks before they can speak on the record again. Reinstating a short, time-limited comment period at the conclusion of meetings would make our process more responsive and welcoming to the citizens who take the time to attend.
This is a matter of good governance — supporting a simple, standard practice that promotes transparency and keeps residents engaged. Based on my experience in local service, I believe bringing this practice back would be a positive, unifying step for our city.
