Disingenuous citing of JEC report
Letter to the Editor
This letter is in response to Luke Zastrow’s Jan. 30 letter in which he cited a U.S. Joint Economic Committee report. Mr. Zastrow stated that he was surprised by the information he found in the report. I agree, I also was surprised, so I decided to look into the report he cited.
The specific report he cited was released by the Democrats on the JEC, not jointly by the Democrats and Republicans as he claimed. The JEC is indeed a joint committee made up of equal members of the Democratic and Republican parties. However, each party can produce reports and those reports will indicate which party is reporting.
The report Mr. Zastrow cited was produced by the Democrat members of the JEC, so it is not surprising that it concluded that the U.S. economy is better under Democratic Party administrations. Neither party would produce any report that did not promote their party.
It is erroneous and disingenuous to state that the JEC released a report agreed to by all members, a majority, or even a consensus of members when it was written by Democrats to support the Democratic Party using information they selected. I am sure that each party produces reports that portray themselves in the best light. Spreading misinformation helps no one.
