Michigan legislators should make careful decisions about ICE

Letter to the editor

While I know that I am not a direct constituent of every office or an acquaintance of all reading this message, we are all Michiganders and Americans, and I respectfully ask that you consider my concerns outlined below and choose to contact all of our Michigan legislators in Washington.

To my Michigan Senators and Representatives,

I am deeply troubled by reports of ICE operations and treatment of individuals in other states. It seems inevitable that Michigan will experience ICE presence in the future. For that reason, I urge you to exercise great care in any votes related to ICE funding, authority, and operational guidelines.

Of particular concern are reports that ICE agents lack formal training in crowd control, are granted broad immunity from prosecution, and are authorized to use force with limited oversight. The use of masks to conceal agents’ identities further erodes public trust and creates fear within communities. These practices are incompatible with democratic accountability and the rule of law.

I recognize that immigration enforcement is a complex and legitimate policy issue. However, enforcement must be conducted with clear standards, transparency, proper training, and meaningful oversight. I ask that you stand up for reforms that establish respectable, humane and enforceable guidelines governing ICE operations.

Thank you for your attention and your service to All the people of Michigan.
