Ukraine
EDITOR:
Frankly, I haven’t read Mr. Aho’s letter entitled “Respect for Zelensky” but based on a published response to the same I’m pretty sure Mr. Aho and I would be on the same page. In the latest Gallup poll on Ukraine, 46% of those surveyed believe that the U.S. is not doing enough to support Ukraine, while only 30% think we are doing too much. The same poll found support for helping Ukraine reclaim territory at 53%.
The survey also appears to show that the majority of Americans are more clear-eyed about the character of the leaders of Ukraine and Russia than the Trump Administration. Seventy-nine percent of those surveyed were either very concerned (52%) or somewhat concerned (27%) that “Russia would violate the terms of any agreement reached.” Also, 70% thought “The agreement would be too favorable to Russia”.
By comparison, only 28% believed Ukraine would violate any agreement and 20% thought an agreement would be too favorable to Ukraine.
Sixty-four percent would support sending additional weapons and military supplies to Ukraine if Russia violated the terms of a ceasefire and 42% would advocate for airstrikes on Russian military targets located in Ukraine.
The Oval Office meeting if not an “ambush” certainly appeared to be orchestrated and lacked the decorum and diplomacy one should expect from the U.S. President and Vice-President. Trump and Vance were insinuating that Ukraine would have to cede territory to the invader Russia.
Invading countries haven’t historically been rewarded with ill-gotten gains but admittedly accepted international norms mean little in the Trump-Putin Era.
