The IRS ‘screwed up’
EDITOR:
On June 3, 2024 my family received a letter from the IRS indicating that we owed $4,900.31 for our 2023 taxes as we had under paid. Our taxes have been prepared for the last 40 years by a very reputable local CPA firm. We have never received any letter of this sort from the IRS. We immediately contacted the tax firm and they looked into it. Long story short, we did not owe the money. We were told the IRS “screwed up”. We were also told that many people locally had received the same letter. Note, this letter did in fact come from the IRS and they were demanding the amount be paid within two weeks or there would be additional penalties and interests applied beyond the penalties and interests already assessed. I wonder how many people who received this letter paid it without any questions? If they paid the amount, will they receive a refund? My only advice is that if you recently received a letter from the IRS indicating you owe additional taxes, consult your tax professional to look into the matter. Lastly, is this what we can expect from the additional 80,000 plus new IRS agents going forward?
